In most summer cottages, as a rule, places for defecation are located outside the house – somewhere in the garden or on the outskirts of the summer cottage. But in order to install a normally functioning outdoor toilet, you should dig a deep enough cesspool for it. And then, when the time comes, to extract the waste of “bioproduction” and “attach” them somewhere. Plus, everything else, all this is accompanied by a rather unpleasant “aroma”.
Europeans have long gone the other way – they developed the idea of a dry closet. Summer residents may like this design (Finnish-made “faeces booths” are especially popular). But is it worth spending money if you can make a dry closet for a summer residence with your own hands?. Of course, the finished toilet cabin will look more civilized, there are now many companies selling toilet rooms, so it will not be difficult to find a suitable option, for example, Biotualet -Tut is a site offering toilet cabins.
This design is quite simple. Naturally, you will have to purchase the toilet cubicle itself (or put it together yourself). The cabin must have a toilet seat with a hinged lid.
We installed a toilet cubicle in the place chosen for it (it is desirable that there is a compost pit nearby), slightly digging into the ground. A bucket is installed in the cavity under the lid of the toilet seat, in which the biological mass will be collected. At the end of each “trip” to the toilet, it will be enough to add a little peat to the bucket – it neutralizes the unpleasant odor, and the bacteria in the peat quickly decompose biological masses. Therefore, in the toilet cubicle there must be a container with peat.
If it will be difficult to find marshland in the surrounding area, then you can stock up on purchased peat, intended specifically for such purposes. In extreme cases, you can use the filler of a kitchen dryberry.
When the toilet bucket is full, its contents are thrown into the compost pit (here is another positive moment for the summer resident – additional fertilizer for the garden). To make it more convenient to perform this procedure (and more hygienic), it is recommended to cover the toilet bucket with a dense garbage bag.
The dry closet must be equipped with ventilation. Therefore, in the side walls of the booth below the toilet seat, it will be necessary to make holes for air movement. And do not forget to take care of heating the dry closet in winter – the optimum temperature for the interaction of peat with biological waste is + 100C.
