Cyprus urges people to give up meat on Smoky Thursday

The Animal Protection Party of Cyprus calls on citizens to pay attention to their diet and their health.
In their message, the animal rights activists said that nature generously offers everything that helps our health and, for this reason, citizens have a good opportunity to eat without eating meat.

They added that mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, legumes and any vegetables that are abundant in Cyprus and that contain a large amount of vitamins and microelements will be an excellent substitute for meat.

Smoky Thursday, or in Greek Tsiknopempti (τσικνοπέμπτη)!

The holiday is celebrated in Cyprus and Greece 11 days before Clean Monday. The name “Tsiknopempti” consists of two Greek words – tsikna (τσίκνα), which literally means “the smell of burning” and pempti (πέμπτη), which in Greek means “Thursday”.

On this day, according to tradition, all Greek Cypriots must fry meat on an open fire and enjoy the taste of meat food before Lent.
