The Department of the Environment will fine shops up to €250 for violating the latest plastic bag ban, which came into effect on Saturday 18 February.
“In the coming days, checks on compliance with the relevant legislation will begin on the island. Small shops that violate the law will be fined 150 euros, and large supermarkets – 250 euros,” said Marios Antoniou, secretary general of the retail association.
Recall that the ban applies to thin plastic bags, the thickness of which does not exceed 50 microns. This rule also applies to biodegradable bags.
An exception was made only for small plastic bags that can be used in stores “for hygienic purposes” – for packaging products that should not come into contact with each other.
The purpose of the innovation is the protection of nature.
It is worth noting that plastic bags in Cypriot supermarkets became paid from July 1, 2018. Customers have begun to actively use reusable bags for carrying products and goods. In the first year, the use of packages decreased by 80%.
