High-rise construction in the center of Nicosia may be banned

No high-rise building in the fortress city of Nicosia should be given a construction permit, since this is a special area that needs to be protected.

The Environmental Movement of Cyprus came to such conclusions after the Ministry of Internal Affairs insisted on issuing a permit for urban planning for a 10-storey building on Kiniras Street.

This proposal was opposed by deputies, residents of the district and the capital’s technical chamber ETEK.

In particular, the Municipal Council of Nicosia twice overwhelmingly rejected the developer’s application for such a permit for urban development. The rationale was that if he gave the go-ahead, it would set a dangerous precedent, opening the way for new developments in other areas of a special nature.

The movement also pointed out that the mistake made in coastal Limassol thanks to those who took advantage of the government’s naturalization plan should not be repeated in Nicosia. Especially around the old town, which has been designated as a special character zone. representatives of the movement noted that in addition to visual aesthetics, there are dozens of other reasons not to build towers there.

In their opinion, this will create problems with transport and accessibility, as well as with the lack of parking spaces, sewerage, garbage collection, water supply and electricity.
